Post-Purchase Upsell Email
You've configured Order Editing perfectly. Your upsells are optimized. Your checkout installation is flawless. But here's the problem: most customers close the Thank You page within seconds.
They're excited about their purchase, they quickly scan the confirmation, and they're gone—often before they even notice they can edit their order or add items.
The solution? Reach them in their inbox with a strategic post-purchase email.
Why Email Matters
The data tells the story:
Email open rates for order confirmations: 60-70% (far higher than marketing emails)
Customers check email within minutes of placing an order
Merchants using Klaviyo post-purchase emails see 2-3x higher editing engagement
Email creates a second touchpoint when customers are still in buying mode
What this means: An automated email reminder brings customers back to your Order Status page during the editing window, dramatically increasing the chances they'll add items, complete their order, or make necessary changes.
Setup Instructions
Step 1: Design Your Email Template
Create an email template in Klaviyo that notifies customers about their editing window.
High-Converting Copy Examples:
Subject lines:
"There's space in your package!"
"Last chance to make changes!"
"Did you forget something?"
"Still time to add to your order!"
Email body suggestions:
Emphasize the time limit (e.g., "You have 30 minutes to make changes")
Highlight what they can do (add items, change address, etc.)
Create urgency without pressure
Include clear call-to-action button
Step 2: Hyperlink to Order Editing
Add a hyperlink that directs customers to their Order Status page where they can edit their order.
Dynamic URL to Use:
{{ event.extra.order_status_url }}
Where to add this URL:
Button (recommended: "Edit My Order" or "Make Changes")
Image/banner
Text link in email body
Important note: This dynamic URL won't work in test/preview emails as it requires a live Shopify order to connect to. It automatically takes each customer to their specific Order Status page.
Step 3: Configure Email Settings
Exclude Smart Sending:
In Klaviyo email settings
Disable/remove Smart Sending for this email
Why: Smart Sending might delay the email beyond the editing window
Exclude POS Sales (if applicable):
If you use POS (Point of Sale) systems:
Add a filter to exclude POS orders
Why: POS customers don't typically need post-purchase editing emails
Step 4: Create Email Flow Sequence
Set up an automated flow in Klaviyo:
Flow Structure:
Trigger: Order Created
Wait: 1 minute
Action: Send Order Editing email
Why wait 1 minute?
Gives order time to process in Shopify
Ensures customer has received order confirmation first
Email arrives while customer is still engaged with their purchase
Flow Configuration:
In Klaviyo, create a new Flow
Set trigger: Placed Order or Order Created
Add Time Delay: 1 minute
Add Email: Your Order Editing email template
(Optional) Add filters to exclude POS orders
Activate the flow
Complete Setup Checklist
Email template designed with compelling copy
Dynamic URL {{ event.extra.order_status_url }} added to button/link
Smart Sending disabled for this email
POS sales excluded (if applicable)
Flow created: Order Created → Wait 1 min → Send email
Flow activated
Best Practices
Email Design:
Clear CTA button - Make "Edit My Order" button prominent and clickable
Mobile-optimized - Most customers read emails on phones
Brief and scannable - Highlight key info (time limit, what they can do)
Brand-consistent - Match your store's voice and design
Timing:
Send quickly - 1-2 minutes after order creation is ideal
Consider editing window - For 30-min windows, send within first few minutes
Don't send too late - Email should arrive early in editing window
Copy:
Create urgency - "You have 30 minutes" or "Last chance"
Highlight benefits - "Add items you forgot" or "Free to make changes"
Action-oriented - Use verbs: "Edit," "Add," "Change," "Update"
Positive tone - Helpful, not pushy
Email Copy Template Examples
Example 1: Space in Package
Subject: There's still space in your package! 📦
Body: Thanks for your order! You have 30 minutes to make any last-minute changes.
Add items you forgot
Update your shipping address
Change product sizes or colors
[Edit My Order Button]
Hurry—your editing window closes soon!
Example 2: Last Chance
Subject: Last chance to make changes ⏰
Body: Your order is being prepared, but there's still time to make changes!
You have 30 minutes to:
Add additional items
Update your address
Adjust quantities
[Make Changes Button]
After 30 minutes, your order will be sent for fulfillment.
Testing
How to Test:
Design phase: Use Klaviyo's preview feature for layout/design only
Flow testing: Place a real test order on your store
Check timing: Verify email arrives ~1 minute after order
Test link: Click "Edit My Order" button in the email
Verify destination: Confirm it takes you to the Order Status page
Make edits: Test adding items, changing address, etc.
Monitor: Check that edits are processed correctly
Remember: The dynamic URL won't work in Klaviyo preview/test mode—only with live orders.
Troubleshooting
Dynamic URL not working: This is expected in preview mode; test with a real order
Email not sending: Verify flow is activated and trigger is set to "Order Created"
Email delayed: Check that Smart Sending is disabled
POS orders receiving emails: Add filter to exclude POS sales
Email arrives after editing window: Reduce time delay or send immediately after order creation
Button not clickable: Ensure dynamic URL is properly formatted in button link settings
Why This Strategy Works
Increased visibility: Email reaches customers who closed the Thank You page quickly
Higher engagement: Inbox notification prompts action better than on-site messaging
Urgency creation: Time-limited offer encourages immediate action
Upsell opportunities: Reminds customers they can add items, increasing AOV
Proven results: Merchants using Klaviyo emails see measurably higher editing engagement
