# Getting Started with Order Editing

## What is Order Editing?

Order Editing is a Shopify app that enables **self-service post-purchase order editing** for your customers. Instead of contacting support to make changes, customers can edit their own orders within a configurable time window after checkout.

## How does it work?

**Where Editing Happens**

Customers first see the Order Editing function at the “Thank You” page (immediately after checkout), before being brought to the "Order Status" page where edits can be made. We can also integrate direclty with your order confirmation email. We’ll help you set these up later in this guide.

**Custom Rules at Your Fingertips**

Set time limits on when customers can make edits, decide which edits are allowed, and automatically lock orders when they’re ready to be processed by a third-party system.

## What You'll Achieve

By the end of this onboarding process, your customers will be able to:

* Edit their orders immediately after purchase
* Add forgotten items or remove unwanted products
* Update shipping addresses and contact information
* Change product variants like size or color
* Apply discount codes they forgot at checkout

**All without contacting your support team.**

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://order-editing.gitbook.io/oe-help-book/onboard/getting-started-with-order-editing.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
