Rules
Step 2: Configure any fulfilment rules. Create a rule where only your store's staff can edit their orders while you complete tests, then delete this rule when you are ready to go customer-facing!
What Are Order Editing Rules?
Order Editing Rules allow you to create custom conditions that control when and how customers can edit their orders. Instead of a single editing deadline for all orders, you can create different rules based on customer location, shipping method, order tags, time of day, and more.
Use cases:
Extend editing windows for overnight orders
Restrict editing for specific countries or regions
Disable editing for gift card orders to prevent fraud
Allow only staff to edit orders (perfect for testing)
Custom deadlines based on shipping method
How Order Editing Rules Work
Rules override your standard editing deadline for orders that match specific conditions.
Example: Your standard editing deadline is 30 minutes, but you create a rule that gives customers 12 hours if they order between 6 PM and 6 AM. Orders placed at 8 PM would have until 8 AM the next morning to edit.
Priority: Rules take precedence over your default editing deadline settings. If an order matches multiple rules, the first matching rule applies.
Creating a Rule
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Navigate to Settings > Order Editing Rules
Click Create a Rule
Add Matching Condition:
Click Add Matching Condition
Select your condition type (customer location, shipping method, order tags, time, etc.)
Configure the specific criteria
Add multiple conditions if needed (all must match)
Select Order Expiration Action:
Choose what happens when conditions are met:
Extend editing window - Give more time (e.g., 12 hours instead of 30 minutes)
Shorten editing window - Reduce time (e.g., 10 minutes instead of 30)
Disable editing - No editing allowed for these orders
Staff only - Only staff can edit these orders
Customize Customer Communication (Optional):
Edit the message customers see about their editing window
Customize notification text
Add specific instructions
Click Save Rule
Popular Rule Templates
Order Editing includes pre-built templates for common scenarios. Click Use Template to apply these rules instantly.

Template 1: Only Staff Can Edit Orders (Testing)
Use case: Perfect for testing Order Editing before launching to customers. Only your team can make edits while you verify everything works correctly.
When to use:
During initial setup and testing
Before going live with customers
Troubleshooting integration issues
Template 2: Same-Day Shipping Cutoff Protection
Use case: Orders placed near your same-day shipping cutoff shouldn't be editable to ensure they ship same-day.
When to use:
You promote same-day shipping to your customers
You have a set cut-off time
Result: Orders near cutoff go straight to fulfillment, ensuring same-day shipping promise is met.
Template 3: Evening Order Editing Extension
Use case: Great for merchants who want to allow customers to make edits overnight before fulfillment the next day. Orders placed in the evening get extended editing time until morning fulfillment begins.
Why this works:
Orders placed at night won't be fulfilled until morning anyway
Gives customers more time without delaying fulfillment
Reduces "change my order" requests the next day
Advanced Rule Examples
Example 1: Express Shipping Orders (Shorter Window)
Scenario: Orders with Express shipping need to ship faster, so give customers less editing time.
Conditions:
Shipping method contains "Express" OR "Overnight" OR "2-Day"
Expiration Action:
Shorten editing window to 10 minutes
Result: Express orders have 10 minutes to edit instead of standard 30 minutes, ensuring faster fulfillment.
Example 2: Weekend Orders Hold
Scenario: Your warehouse doesn't operate on weekends, so orders placed Friday evening through Sunday can be edited until Monday morning.
Conditions:
Order placed on Friday after 5 PM OR Saturday OR Sunday
Expiration Action:
Extend editing window until Monday 8 AM
Result: Weekend orders have extended editing time without delaying fulfillment since warehouse is closed anyway.
Testing Your Rules
How to Test a Rule:
Create the rule and save it
Place a test order that matches the rule conditions
Example: For "Evening Order Extension," place order after 6 PM
Check the editing interface on Thank You/Order Status page
Verify the editing deadline matches your rule
Verify the custom communication message appears (if set)
Test that orders NOT matching the rule use standard deadline
Tip: Use the "Only Staff Can Edit" rule during testing to prevent real customers from accessing editing while you verify rules work correctly.
Customer Communication Customization
Why Customize Messages:
Default messages may not explain your specific rules clearly. Custom messages help customers understand:
Why their editing window is different
What their specific deadline is
What to do if they need help
Example custom messages:
For Evening Extension: "Your order was placed after hours. You can make changes until 8 AM tomorrow when fulfillment begins."
For Gift Card Orders: "For security reasons, orders containing gift cards cannot be edited online. Please contact our support team at support@yourstore.com if you need assistance."
For VIP Customers: "As a VIP member, you have an extended 60-minute editing window. Thank you for your loyalty!
