"This Goes With That" is a flexible upsell strategy that allows you to place product recommendations anywhere on your Thank You and Order Status pages with full size and position control. It's ideal for merchants who want more design flexibility than the standard Primary Upsell carousel provides.

Important: Cannot Be Used With Primary Upsell

"This Goes With That" Upsell Offer replaces the Primary Upsell carousel. These two features cannot be used together—you must choose one or the other.

Choose "This Goes With That" if:

  • You want custom placement and sizing control

  • You have specific design requirements

  • You prefer flexibility over preset layouts

Choose Primary Upsell if:

  • You want a quick, ready-made carousel solution

  • You prefer the standard placement and styling


Setting Up "This Goes With That" Upsell Offer

Step 1: Create Your Upsell Strategy

  1. Navigate to Upsell Strategies in your Order Editing dashboard

  2. Click Create New Strategy

  3. Select "This Goes With That" Offer template

  4. Follow the prompts to configure your strategy (see examples below)

  5. Click Save

Step 2: Add Block to Thank You Page

  1. Go to Shopify Settings > Checkout

  2. Click Customize (for your active checkout configuration)

  3. Navigate to the Thank You Page tab

  4. Click Add Block

  5. Select "Personalised Upsell" from Order Editing

  6. Note: The block will not populate or show content—this is normal

  7. Position the block where you want it to appear on the page

  8. Customize in Block Settings (see Best Practices below):

  9. Adjust sizing and aspect ratio

  10. Click Save

Step 3: Add Block to Order Status Page

  1. While still in Checkout customization, navigate to the Order Status Page tab

  2. Click Add Block

  3. Select "Multi Currency Offers" from Order Editing

  4. Note: The block will not populate or show content—this is normal

  5. Position the block where you want it to appear

  6. Customize in Block Settings:

  7. Adjust sizing and aspect ratio

  8. Click Save

Note: If you don’t add these blocks to the checkout, the strategy will populate in the form of a Primary Upsell carousel.


Best Practice: Adjust Block Size

Default Size Issue

The upsell block loads at a very large size by default, which can overwhelm the page and look disproportionate.

Reduce the block size using aspect ratio settings:

  1. Select the upsell block in your checkout customization

  2. Locate Aspect Ratio settings

  3. Change to 3:1 ratio (or similar)

  4. This creates a wider, shorter display that fits better on the page

  5. Test different ratios to find what works best for your design

Alternative ratios to try:

  • 3:1 - Wide and compact (recommended starting point)

  • 4:1 - Even wider, very compact

  • 2:1 - Balanced width and height


Configuration Examples

Simple Example: Broad Appeal

Goal: Show recently viewed products to all customers

Setup:

  • Rule: None

  • Applies to all orders

  • Product Module: Recently Viewed Products

  • Shows items customer has browsed

  • Strategy Discount: 20%

Result: All customers see products they recently viewed with 20% discount, placed exactly where you want on the page with custom sizing.


Advanced Example: High-Value Targeted Offer

Goal: Upsell premium accessories to high-value surfboard buyers

Setup:

  • Rule 1: Product Type equals "Surfboard"

  • Rule 2: Order Total is greater than $200

  • Targets only premium surfboard purchases

  • Product Module: A Group of Products - Various surf waxes

  • Manually curated selection of wax products

  • Strategy Discount: 50%

  • High discount for high-value customers

Step-by-Step: Creating Your Strategy

1. Set Your Rules (Triggers)

Define when the upsell appears

Common rules:

  • Order value thresholds - "Order total is greater than $X"
