Primary Upsell

What is Primary Upsell?

Primary Upsell is the standard upsell feature configured in the App Blocks section. It displays a carousel of products on the Thank You and Order Status pages, allowing customers to browse and add items to their order during the editing window.

Key Features

Products appear in a sliding carousel format that customers can browse by scrolling left or right. This familiar interface makes it easy for customers to discover additional items.

Where It Appears

When enabled, Primary Upsell displays on:

  • Thank You Page - Immediately after checkout

  • Order Status Page - When customers check their order status

Product Control

You have complete control over which products appear:

  • Limit product results - Control how many products show in the carousel

  • Curate your catalog - Manually select which products to display

  • Individual discount rates - Set different discounts for each product (or no discount at all)

No Rule-Based Targeting

Important: Primary Upsell is a generic upsell strategy with no rule options. It shows the same products to all customers, regardless of what they purchased. This makes it simple to set up but less targeted than other strategies.

For targeted upsells based on rules (order value, products in cart, etc.), use:

Setting Up Primary Upsell

Step 1: Enable Primary Upsell in App Blocks

  1. Navigate to App Blocks in your Order Editing dashboard

  2. Locate Primary Upsell

  3. Toggle ON

  1. In the Primary Upsell settings

  2. Tick "Allow customers to search for products to purchase"

  • This enables the Product Catalog function

  • Customers can browse and search your entire catalog (works with Product Catalog App Block)

Step 3: Set Product Limit

Control how many products appear in the carousel:

  1. Locate Limit Product Results in Primary Upsell settings

  2. Enter the maximum number of products to display

  • Example: "12" to show 12 products in the carousel

  1. Recommendation: 6-12 products works best

  • Too many = overwhelming

  • Too few = limited choice in a generic upsell strategy

Step 4: Select Products to Promote

Choose which products appear in the Primary Upsell carousel:

Manual Selection:

  1. Click Select Products or Add Products

  2. Search for products in your catalog

  3. Click to add each product you want to promote

  4. Repeat until you've selected all desired products

Tip: Choose complementary items, bestsellers, or low value items

Automatic Selection (if available):

Alternatively, use filters to automatically include products:

  • By Tags (e.g., "upsell", "featured")

  • By Collections (e.g., "Accessories")

Note: If left untouched, Order Editing will natively choose products based on what your best sellers.

Step 5: Set Individual Product Discounts

Assign discount rates to each product:

  1. After selecting products, you'll see a list of chosen items

  2. Next to each product, enter a discount percentage

  • Example: "15" for 15% off

  • Leave blank or enter "0" for no discount

  1. Different discounts for different products:

  • High-margin item: 25% discount

  • Standard item: 10% discount

  • Clearance item: 5% discount

  1. Click Save

Understanding Global Discount vs. Product Discount

How Discounts Work Together

Global Discount (set in Post-Purchase Upsell Discount) and Product Discount set can both apply to the same product.

Order Editing automatically displays the higher discount rate.

Example 1:

  • Global Discount: 10%

  • Product Discount on Blue Shirt: 20%

  • Customer sees: 20% off (higher discount wins)

Example 2:

  • Global Discount: 25%

  • Product Discount on Red Hat: 15%

  • Customer sees: 25% off (higher discount wins)

Why this matters: You can set a baseline Global Discount and strategically offer higher discounts on specific products in Primary Upsell.

Optimal Configuration

The most effective setup for Primary Upsell is:

Settings Configuration:

  • Global Discount: 0%

  • Product Catalog App Block: Enabled

  • Primary Upsell: Enabled with selective discounts

Why this works:

Product Catalog with 0% Global Discount:

  • Customers can browse your entire catalog at full price

  • Perfect for customers who forgot an item or want to add something specific

  • No blanket discount reduces margin loss

Primary Upsell with Selective Discounts:

  • Highlight strategic products with targeted discounts

  • Creates visual distinction between "regular" and "promoted" items

  • Encourages add-ons on high-margin or featured products

Example in Practice:

Customer experience:

  1. Customer completes order

  2. Sees Primary Upsell carousel with 6 featured products at 15-20% off

  3. Can also click "Browse Products" to search full catalog at full price

  4. Adds a discounted item from carousel + a full-price item they forgot

Result: You get both strategic upsells with discounts AND full-price add-ons from customers who need specific items.

When to Use Primary Upsell

Use Primary Upsell if you:

  • Want a simple, straightforward upsell with no complex rules

  • Have a set of products you want to promote to everyone

  • Prefer carousel format for browsing

  • Don't need targeting based on cart contents or order value

  • Want quick setup without strategy configuration

Consider Other Upsell Strategies if you:

  • Need targeting based on cart contents (use Checkout Upsell)

  • Want post-payment pop-up upsells (use One-Click AOV Upsell)

  • Need custom sizing and placement (use "This Goes With That")

  • Want rule-based product display (use targeted strategies)

Best Practices

Product Selection:

  • Feature 6-12 products - Sweet spot for choice without overwhelm

  • Choose complementary items - Products that pair well with common purchases

  • Include bestsellers - Social proof drives conversions

  • Mix price points - Offer both budget-friendly and premium options

  • Rotate seasonally - Update products based on time of year or promotions

Discount Strategy:

  • Use strategic discounts - 10-25% on featured items

  • Lower discounts on popular items - They'll sell with minimal incentive

  • Test different rates - Monitor which discounts convert best

  • Combine with 0% Global Discount - Allows full catalog browsing at full price

Display:

  • Enable on both pages - Thank You and Order Status for maximum visibility

  • Keep carousel clean - Don't overcrowd with too many products

  • Use high-quality images - Professional photos increase clicks

  • Write clear product titles - Customers should immediately understand what's offered
