Why do I need to change Payment capture?
When This is Required
This setting is only required if you're using the Delayed Payment Capture method for your integration. If your system uses the Released Tag Flow or ON-HOLD Tag Flow, you do not need to change this setting.
Why This is Required (For Delayed Payment Capture Only)
For Order Editing to work with systems that download "Paid" orders, you need to change Shopify's payment capture method from Automatic to Manual or Automatic at fulfilment. This allows Shopify Flow to control when payments are captured, creating the editing window for your customers.
This setting change is completely safe. 95% of our merchants operate with manual or automatic at fulfilment enabled, and it's a standard practice for stores using order editing or delayed fulfillment workflows.
How to Change Payment Capture Setting
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Go to Shopify Admin > Settings
Click Payments
Scroll to Payment capture method section
Change from Automatically at checkout to Manually
Click Save
That's it! Once set to Manual, Shopify Flow and Order Editing will handle payment capture timing automatically.
Is This Safe?
Yes, absolutely. Manual payment capture with automated capture timing (via Shopify Flow) is:
Industry standard for stores with editing windows or delayed fulfillment
Used by 95% of Order Editing merchants without issues
Fully secure - Payments are still authorized and protected
Automated by Shopify Flow - No risk of forgetting to capture payments
Recommended by Shopify for apps like Order Editing
Common Questions
Q: Will I need to manually capture every payment? A: No. Shopify Flow automatically captures payments when the editing period ends. "Manual" just means Shopify won't capture immediately—it waits for Flow's signal.
Q: Can I switch back to automatic capture later? A: Yes, but Order Editing won't function properly with automatic capture if you're using the Delayed Payment Capture method. You'd need to disable Order Editing features first or switch to a different Flow type.
Q: Do I need this if I'm using Released Tag or ON-HOLD Tag Flows? A: No. This setting is only required for Delayed Payment Capture Flow. Other Flow types don't require changing payment capture settings.
Q: What about authorization expiry? A: Payment authorizations typically last 7 days before expiring. Since Order Editing windows are typically 15-60 minutes, this is never an issue. Payments are captured within minutes or hours, well before authorization expires.
