Let customers edit their shipping address.

Editing Shipping Addresses

Order Editing is a Shopify app that enables customers to make changes to their orders, including changing the shipping address. With Order Editing, customers can easily edit their shipping address, and the app will validate the address using USPS's shipping validation tools to ensure that the order can be delivered to the new address.

Here's how the address validation feature works:

  • When a customer places an order on your store and uses the Order Editing app, they will receive an email with a link that allows them to edit their order.
  • When the customer clicks on the link, they will be taken to the Order Editing app where they can make changes to their order, including changing the shipping address.
  • If the customer changes the shipping address to an address within the US, the app will automatically validate the address using USPS's shipping validation tools.
  • If the address is valid, the app will update the order with the new address.
  • If the address is invalid, the app will prevent the customer from submitting the address change and will prompt the customer to enter a valid address.

By using USPS's shipping validation tools, Order Editing ensures that the customer's new shipping address is accurate and can be delivered by the carrier. This helps to prevent delivery errors and ensures that your customers receive their orders on time.

In addition to the address validation feature, Order Editing offers other features that allow customers to make changes to their orders, including changing the quantities of items in their orders, upgrading or downgrading items, and adding notes to their orders. With these features, customers have the flexibility they need to make changes to their orders even after checkout, which can help to improve customer satisfaction and reduce the number of support requests you receive.

USPS Validation

USPS (United States Postal Service) uses a tool called the Address Management System (AMS) to validate addresses. The AMS is a database of every deliverable address in the United States, including residential and commercial addresses. When a customer enters an address in the Order Editing app, the app sends the address information to USPS, which compares the address to the AMS database to ensure that it is a valid address.

Here are some of the ways that USPS validates addresses:

  • Address standardization: USPS standardizes addresses using a standardized format to ensure that addresses are consistent and can be easily read by their automated systems. This includes formatting the address in all capital letters, abbreviating certain words, and adding ZIP+4 codes.

  • Address correction: If the address entered by the customer is not in the AMS database, USPS will try to find a match by making slight modifications to the address. For example, if the customer enters "123 Main St," but the correct address is "123 Main Street," USPS will correct the address and provide the corrected address to the Order Editing app.

  • Address validation: USPS will validate the address by checking it against the AMS database to ensure that the address is deliverable. If the address is not deliverable, the app will prompt the customer to enter a valid address.

By using the AMS database to validate addresses, USPS ensures that the addresses are accurate and can be delivered to the intended recipient. This helps to prevent delivery errors, which can be costly and time-consuming for both the customer and the merchant. It's important to note that while USPS's address validation tools are highly effective, they may not catch every possible error. It's always a good idea to double-check the address with the customer to ensure that it is correct and can be delivered to the intended recipient.
